Dependent Visa for Family Members

If your family plans to stay in Japan for more than 90 days, you need to acquire a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for a Dependent Visa, which can only be obtained for your dependent spouse and children.

 

International students already in Japan can apply for the Certificate of Eligibility (dependent) at the Immigration Bureau on behalf of their family members.

 

You must also secure accommodation that is designed for a family. 

 

Procedure

  1. Download the application form from Application for Certificate of Eligibility.
  2. Prepare the necessary documents.
  3. Apply for a COE at the Immigration Bureau.
  4. Receive the COE from the Immigration Bureau.
  5. Send the COE via international express mail to your family in your home country.
  6. With the COE, family members can apply for a visa at the Embassy of Japan in your home country.

To the Immigration Bureau

  • Application Form for each member of your family
  • A copy of your Passport (photo page, visa page, and landing permission page)
  • A copy of your spouse’s/children’s Passport (photo page)
  • A copy of your Residence Card (both sides)
  • One Photo for each member of your family (4 cm x 3 cm)*
  • Certificate of Enrollment
  • Certificate of Scholarship
  • A copy of official marriage certificate in your native language
  • A copy of official marriage certificate translated into English
  • A copy of official birth certificate in your native language
  • A copy of official birth certificate translated into English
  • Self-addressed and stamped envelope** (affix a 404 yen stamp for registered mail)

 

*The photo must have been taken within three months prior to submission.

**Please prepare an envelope, also please purchase a stamp (404 yen) at a convenience store or post office.
