Leaving Japan
Temporary Departure from Japan and Re-entry
On Campus |
Notify your program coordinator at least two weeks before departure. |
Airport Customs |
Present your resident card. On an ED (Embarkation/Disembarkation) card for Special Re-entry Permits, tick the column indicating your intention to depart using the Special Re-entry Permit System. |
Before leaving Japan, you will need to complete procedures at GRIPS, the local city office, the bank, etc. Please plan in advance and complete all of the necessary procedures using the Pre-Departure Checklist.
At Ward or City office
- Submit a Moving Abroad Notification
- Withdraw from National Health Insurance
- Return your Individual Number Card (My number card)
At the Airport
- Return your “Resident Card” to an Immigration Inspector
Moving
Arrange your moving with a moving company (in case you move within Japan). Prepare moving at least one month in advance. Reserve a mover as soon as you plan that you will be moving. You will need to complete procedures at the local city office, the bank, etc.
Please complete all of the necessary procedures using the Pre-Moving Checklist.
Procedures at Ward or City Office
You will need to visit your local city office in person with your resident card and National Health Insurance Card several days before and after moving.

Go to City Office with Resident Card.

Submit a Moving-Out Notification.

Obtain a Moving-out Certificate (Tenshutsu Todoke Shomeisho).

Settle National Health Insurance Payment.
‹Within 14 days after moving›

Go to City Office in a new area with Resident Card.

Present a Moving-out Certificate (Tenshutsu Todoke Shomeisho).

Submit Move-in Notification Form.

Update Resident Card.

Apply or update National Health Insurance Card.
If you have changed your address, follow the procedures below:

Academic Support Team (AST)
Please notify GRIPS AST of your new address immediately.

Student Office (SO)
After updating your Resident Card at the city office, please bring a copy
(both front and back sides) to the SO.

International Program Team (IPT)
Please show the updated Resident Card to your program coordinator.
Submit a “Change of Address” application to the post office, they will forward your mail to your new address for one year. Please register on the Post Office Website.
