The sixth “Japan-IMF Macroeconomic Seminar for Asia (JIMS)” took place from February 20 to 24, 2017, at GRIPS. JIMS is an executive training program targeting senior officials of central banks and ministries of finance of emerging countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It is an annual collaborative project between GRIPS and the IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP). Twenty-nine senior government officials from 21 countries participated in the JIMS of 2017.

Under the theme of “Achieving Sustainable Growth under Globalization”, the five-day seminar discussed current macroeconomic issues and challenges faced by emerging Asia, such as unconventional monetary policy, exchange rate management, demographic changes and economic growth, managing sovereign debt crisis, global value chains and regional economic integration. Excellent speakers and discussants from the Bank of Japan, OAP, ADB Institute, University of Tokyo and Keio University and GRIPS shared their experiences and insights with the participants. Inspired by the speakers, the seminar participants actively joined the discussion and offered their views on economic perspectives and challenges of their home countries.

At the end of the seminar, each participant was awarded a certificate of completion by Professor Yuqing Xing, the Program Director of JIMS. On the last evening, a farewell reception was held and the seminar participants, speakers and guests from some foreign embassies together spent the last moment in Tokyo.

It is another successful event and highly evaluated by the participants: ‘It was very fruitful seminar that make us broaden our view and improve our knowledge’.
