International Cartels: Enforcement Institutions and Policy Instruments (EC and Japanese laws and policies)

As corporate activities become increasingly globalized, price fixing, bid rigging and market sharing – which are regarded as “hard-core” cartel conduct – as well as the damages caused by this conduct are becoming international issues. With a view to gaining a deeper understanding of EU cartel regulations and clarifying the interface issues for Japan, a Symposium was organized on 16 April 2008 with the cooperation of the Japan-EU Industrial Cooperation Centre and the law firm Nagashima, Ohno & Tsunematsu, and with the support of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Fair Trade Commission. Two hundred eighty people participated in the Symposium and discussed policy, legal and economic issues involving competition law enforcement in relation to international cartels.
