FPCI-GRIPS Conference on ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific “Towards Realization of the Indo-Pacific Cooperation under AOIP”

The conference is hosted and initiated by Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) of Japan.

The first country that introduced the concept of Indo-Pacific was Japan, at the address of the late Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, in the Indian Parliament in 2007. Indonesia pushed the concept of the outlook on Indo-Pacific which was later regionally adopted as ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP) in 2019.

Having a regional outlook is important for ASEAN countries because it gives the region a platform to see the Indo-Pacific debate among its dialogue partners such as the US, Japan, Australia, India and the EU. Furthermore, ASEAN sits right at the center of the Indo-Pacific; hence, the region should have a vision dedicated to it.

Since the adoption of the concept, all ASEAN partners have acknowledged and supported the AOIP, including China. The spirit of inclusivity of the outlook makes the AOIP a bridge of differences. Should ASEAN produce another annex document as a follow up to it? How does the outlook place itself in other countries' concepts, such as with the Japanese Free and Open Indo-Pacific?

Prominent speakers from Japan, ASEAN, the US, Australia, India and China will be invited to discuss the AOIP.

Please join us and watch the conference!
