GRIPS Forum “Emerging new tech and leaders: where is Japanese agriculture heading for?”

At GRIPS Forum on 2 November, 2020, Ms. Aoi FUJITA, Secretary General, Nuffield International Farming Scholarship Japan Associate, gave a lecture titled “Emerging new tech and leaders: where is Japanese agriculture heading for?”.

 

 

Abstract:

66.8, 1.4, 3.0, 9… what do these numbers explain? When overviewing Japanese agriculture in numbers, it tends to showcase pessimistic future. Even when population in Japan will never boost, who will then undertake Japan’s food and agriculture? On the other hand, it has strong potential, which is sometimes overlooked; high productivity, cutting-edge technology, first generation farmers. “transformation” phase. Referring to latest cases, the lecture will cover the current situation of “transformation” in Japanese agriculture.

Speaker’s Profile:

Aoi FUJITA started her career as business consultant at Nomura Research Institute(NRI), one of biggest consulting firms in Japan, after finishing an MA in international relations and BA in history both at the University of Tokyo. While in NRI Aoi noticed challenges among Japanese agricultural industry, and in order to enforce it and let herself be a member of strong agriculture, Aoi changed her career to agriculture startup Farmship inc. in June 2016, then to Daiwa Food & Agriculture Co.Ltd.in August 2020. As well as expanding her expertise in business development, she launched a unique incorporated association “Nuffield International Farming Scholarship Associate Japan” with three leading agriculture executives and became secretary general. 

 

 

About GRIPS Forum:

Since its establishment in 1997, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), as the only graduate school in Japan specializing in policy research, has promoted education and research on a wide range of policy issues.

Utilizing our vast policy network, this Forum invites leaders from various fields including government, academia and business, as well as staff from our own faculty, to deliver lectures on current policy concerns.
