Melis02Melis Mambetjanov was born in 1972 in Bishkek (formerly Frunze). After finishing high school with honors, Melis entered the Kyrgyz State University in 1990 to study “English Language and Literature”. After finishing his first year he decided to switch and pursue a major in “Economics and Production Management” at the same university. Upon his graduation in 1996, Melis entered the National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic where he was appointed as Chief Economist of International Cooperation Unit, and later of the Economic Analysis, Methodology and International Cooperation Unit.

 

From 1997 until his enrollment in GRIPS’ forerunner, the Graduate School of Policy Science (GSPS) in 1999, Mr Mambetjanov was Assistant Secretary of the Kyrgyz Republic Minister of Finance. Melis graduated in September 2001 and upon returning from Japan, he continued his career in the Ministry of Finance, initially as Head of the Administrative Reforms Sector, moving on to become the Head of the Budget Policy and then Director of the Budget Department in 2005.

 

Mekis03In July 2007, Melis was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic, while from October 2009 to February 2011 he served as a Chairman of the board in public corporation “Bank-Bakai”. Melis became the Minister of Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic in February 2011. He also serves as Governor for the Kyrgyz Republic of The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
