GRIPS Forum “Changing the World from the Rice Paddies ∼Tsuruoka Science Park's Innovative Challenges”

Abstract:

As a pioneer in data-driven biology, Keio University's Institute for Advanced Life Sciences (established in 2001) in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, has created eight bio-ventures and one urbun development venture, including Spiber (synthetic spider silk), Saliva Tech (cancer test with saliva), and Metagen (improving the intestinal environment by stool examination). The key to the Tsuruoka innovation is the philosophy of "Ordinary is zero points".

Speaker’s Profile:

Masaru Tomita, born in Tokyo in 1957, received the first Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in Computer Science (1985). Dr. Tomita has received 3 more doctorate degrees in his career. These are Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Kyoto University (1994) and Ph.D. in Medicine from Keio University (1998) and Ph.D in Media & Governance from Keio University (2019). Dr. Tomita is a recipient of Presidential Young Investigators Award from National Science Foundation of USA (1988), Shared University Research Award from IBM Corporation (2003), International Metabolomics Society Lifetime Honorary Fellow (2017) and many other awards.

Since its establishment in 1997, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), as the only graduate school in Japan specializing in policy research, has promoted education and research on a wide range of policy issues. Utilizing our vast policy network, this Forum invites leaders from various fields including government, academia and business, as well as staff from our own faculty, to deliver lectures on current policy concerns. The Forum welcomes attendance of GRIPS faculty and students as well as participants from outside the university.
