Abstract:

For so long we have considered the planetary earth had no limit, and our economic development had been supported by a stable and resilient earth system, our global commons. However, our economic development has pushed the carrying capacity of the earths system to its breaking points, transgressing several planetary boundaries. To pass on the sustainable earth environment to the future generation, we must establish a way to safeguard the global commons. In this lecture, I will discuss the mechanism needed to transform our socio-economic system and create an effective framework to steward the global commons, referring to some of the discussions that took place during the COP26.
