Mapping air pollution in low-income countries using low-cost methods

Leader

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for the early deaths of 7-8 million people worldwide each year. Effective policy to reduce air pollution requires monitoring air quality, but the standard equipment is expensive to install and maintain. As a result, many developing countries have few (or even zero) maps of air pollution. For example, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) which is the focus of this study, there is only one monitoring station (and it is frequently unavailable. Recently, low cost hand-held devices for measuring air quality have been developed. They are not so accurate as the traditional equipment, but they are easy to use and cheap. In this project, we will buy two of these devices and use them to build a map of air quality in Addis Ababa. The map will be tied to existing socio-economic data to show the link between location, poverty and exposure to poor air.
