GRIPS Forum: “Demographic Transition and Economic Growth in Asia: Lessons from Japan’s Experience”

Abstract:

This lecture examines the challenges of demographic transition and macroeconomic growth that many Asian countries are beginning to face, drawing on Japan’s experience as a forerunner of aging demographics. It analyzes the impacts of population aging on fiscal sustainability, labor markets, and consumption patterns, and discusses the importance of social security design, promoting labor force participation among older adults and women, and investment in education and reskilling. The lecture offers policy recommendations based on Japan’s lessons, aiming for a balance between growth and equity.

Speakers’ Profile:
Sagiri Kitao is Professor of Economics at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). Her research area is macroeconomics, and she specializes in quantitative analysis of public policies such as tax and social security system, using macroeconomic models with heterogeneous households. She worked at Goldman Sachs, University of Southern California, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the University of Tokyo before assuming her current position in 2024. She holds a Master of Public Administration/International Development from Harvard University and a PhD in Economics from New York University.
