GRIPS Forum: “The Humor of Japan’s Traditional Art of Storytelling “Rakugo””

Abstract:

You will learn about Japanese culture through Rakugo. It portrays the timeless emotions and explores Japanese tradition. Rakugo is a diverse traditional performing art. This Forum provides the unique opportunity to enjoy a Rakugo Story "Okiku's Plates," played by a female Rakugo performer, and experience the humor of Rakugo, its wordplay, gestures, and power of expression.

Speakers’ Profile:
HAYASHIYA Tsuruko/Rakugo performer

In March 2024, she was promoted to the rank of Shinuchi (headliner) with exceptional speed for women in the Rakugo world. She actively engages in new challenges, performing a wide range of Rakugo from traditional humorous stories to new creative ones. Her innovative approach of depicting traditional Rakugo; 'Shibahama,' 'Kowakare,' and 'Konyatakao' by focusing on their female characters has been featured in various media, including TV program 'NEWS ZERO' and monthly magazine 'Bungeishunju.
