Abstract:

Kitakyushu became the first city in Asia to be selected by the OECD as one of its global SDGs Model Cities in 2018, and that same year was also chosen by the Japanese government to be its first "SDGs Future City".Industry, government, academia, and private actors across Kitakyushu are working together to achieve the city’s SDGs, with its strengths of citizen power, manufacturing technology, and environmental initiatives at the core of these efforts. While municipalities across Japan are currently pursuing SDGs, Kitakyushu is developing pioneering initiatives using SDGs as a hook to become a "city of choice" with the aims of becoming a sustainable “city with earning power” and a top runner among SDGs Future Cities.

Speaker’s Profile:

After being hired by the City of Kitakyushu in 1995, she was placed in charge of building a citizen support system and planning public relations efforts for the revitalization of Itozu-no-mori Zoological Park, and then managing and operating the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park. She subsequently worked at the Kitakyushu Tourism Association and the Industry and Economic Bureau’s Tourism Division planning industrial tourism, factory night view tours, and school excursions as well as enhancing the city’s branding, utilizing Kitakyushu's strengths of environmental initiatives and manufacturing as a hook. Serving as Deputy Director and later Director of the SDGs Promotion Office created in 2019 and currently as SDGs Projects Manager (Local Revitalization SDGs Promotion Division), she is aiming to make Kitakyushu a “top runner” in SDGs through citywide collaboration among industry, academia and public- and private-sector actors.
