Mirroring Uganda’s School-Going Males in MHM: Familial-School Gender Politics

研究代表者

The health imperative influences Africa’s attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Menstrual Hygiene among school-going girls is one such area of cultural interpretation of health that needs further research interest. Whereas there is a tendency of treating Menstruation Hygiene Management (MHM) as merely the condition of girls in menstruation, the dynamics around the concept transcend the use and disposal of sanitary materials (both traditional and modern), access to clean water, as well as the gender dimensions associated with access to information of menstrual nature between the family members and other socialisation networks like schools. The proposed study will elucidate the formation of distinctive gender spaces wherein girls and boys may cluster and socialise. The encounters of male MHM fieldworkers in the process of data collection and the strategies of gaining access to sensitive fields such as MHM are explored. This in the long run will enhance knowledge of male participation in menstrual health relations to offer social scientific explanations. Although this research emphasizes males as prominent research subjects, it is also holistic in nature.
