Abstract:

Japan’s high-speed growth was supported by rapid increase of export to the US, but the yen appreciation in 1970s-80s prompted Japanese companies to invest in Asia, making Asia the largest export and import destination for Japan. In the meantime, initially the NIES, and then ASEAN countries, and finally China developed their economies fast. This harmonious economic relation between Asia and Japan had changed in 1990s, due to the bursting of asset bubble in Japan and the Asian Financial Crisis. Thereafter, China has become the leader of the Asian economy and the largest trading partner for Japan.

Speaker: Mr. Haruhiko Kuroda,
