The 38th GRIPS Forum“Globalizing Japanese Manga”

At the 38th GRIPS Forum held on 11 November 2010, GRIPS invited Dr. phil. Jaqueline Berndt, Professor of Kyoto Seika University, to deliver a lecture entitled “Globalizing Japanese Manga.”
At the lecture, she talked about the impact of Japanese manga and why manga is prevalent in the world, exploring manga’s transition from the past to the present and the variety of Japanese manga in the context of Japanese culture.
She also pointed out that the “otaku” concept has different aspects in Japan and Europe and that the permeation of Internet usage rapidly spreads Japanese pop culture, especially manga. We had a good opportunity to look at Japanese manga in a new way at this forum.
