Abstract:

In recent years, the field of market design has seen significant development in economics. While traditional economics has primarily focused on analyzing market institutions taking them as “given,” market design considers them as "designable," not just analyzing them but also studying the desirable institutional designs of markets. The foundational theory for this is "matching theory." This lecture will introduce both the theory and practice of matching theory and market design.

Speakers’ Profile:

Fuhito Kojima is a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Tokyo and a director of the University of Tokyo Market Design Center (UTMD). Kojima received his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and his B.A. in Economics (valedictorian) from the University of Tokyo. He was a postdoctoral fellow of Cowles Foundation at Yale University, a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Economics at Columbia University, and a professor in the Department of Economics at Stanford University before joining the University of Tokyo in September 2020. His research interests include market design, matching theory, and game theory.
