GRIPS Forum: “Implementation of the Smart City Approach in Siem Reap – Challenges toward a Sustainable City –”

This GRIPS Forum will feature the 5th SDGs Award ceremony and talk.

Abstract:
Siem Reap, home to the world-renowned Angkor monuments, is a major tourist destination while also facing pressing urban challenges such as traffic congestion and waste management resulting from rapid growth. In response, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Siem Reap Provincial Government have been jointly promoting a Smart City Project. This seminar will present the outcomes and future prospects of these efforts, including the formulation of the Smart City Roadmap, the development of a data platform, and pilot projects such as improving waste collection and monitoring air quality.

Speaker's Profile:
Mr. Kento Ozaki is Manager of the Urban Development Department at Nippon Koei Co., Ltd., has extensive experience in urban planning and industrial development in emerging countries and is serving as the Team Leader of the Smart City Technical Cooperation Project in Siem Reap. He completed the Master of Public Policy Program at GRIPS in 2013.

What is GRIPS SDGs Award?

In 2015, 193 countries adopted the framework for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UN summit in New York, to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. GRIPS’ current policy on education, research and management is strongly linked to the SDGs and in this light, to promote innovative efforts by alumni towards solving the most pressing environmental, social and economic challenges of our time, we have launched the GRIPS SDGs Awards in 2019.   
The objective of the Awards is to recognize outstanding efforts by alumni that contribute to the achievement of SDGs as well as to disseminate GRIPS’ educational achievements to the world.

What is GRIPS Forum?

Since its establishment in 1997, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) has promoted research and education on a wide variety of policy issues. The GRIPS Forum invites specialists from national and local governments as well as academic and business communities to promote policy studies and expand policy networks.
