GRIPSランチタイムセミナー "How Would China Use its Nuclear Weapons against Japan, and What Should We Do about That?"

The Lunchtime Seminar series at GRIPS is organized to disseminate the latest research findings by our faculty members and to foster academic dialogue within and beyond our community.

The Lunchtime Seminar titled "How Would China Use its Nuclear Weapons against Japan, and What Should We Do about That?", our Professor Dr. Narushige Michishita will discuss the current status of China's nuclear and missile capabilities, the most likely scenario in which China would use nuclear weapons against Japan, and what the United States and Japan should do going forward.

SYNOPSIS:

With the outbreak of war in Ukraine in 2022 and Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion that Russia might use nuclear weapons in the conflict, the possibility of China's nuclear use in the event of a Cross-Strait conflict is becoming an important topic of discussion. In this seminar, Dr. Michishita will discuss the current status of China's nuclear and missile capabilities, the most likely scenario in which China would use nuclear weapons against Japan, and what the United States and Japan should do going forward.


SPEAKER'S BIO:

Dr. Narushige MichishitaNarushige Michishita is Executive Vice President and Professor at GRIPS. A specialist in Japanese security and foreign policy as well as security issues on the Korean Peninsula, he is the author of Fighting the Cold War in the Pacific: The Maritime Strategy, Peacetime Operations, and the US-Japan Alliance (forthcoming), and North Korea's Military-Diplomatic Campaigns, 1966-2008. He acquired his Ph.D. with distinction from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University.


DISCUSSANT'S BIO:

Dr. Yoko IwamaYoko Iwama is Professor and the Director of Strategic Studies Program at GRIPS. Her specialty is international security and European diplomatic history focusing on NATO, Germany, and nuclear strategy. Her publications include The 1968 Global Nuclear Order and West Germany (in Japanese) (Tokyo: Yuhikaku, 2021), and John Baylis and Yoko Iwama, eds., Joining the Non-Proliferation Treaty: Deterrence, Non-Proliferation and the American Alliance (Routledge, 2018). She is currently working on co-authored books on the origins and evolution of the nuclear sharing in NATO and on the neutrals, the non-aligned countries, and the NPT. She holds a Ph.D. in law from Kyoto University.
