The Japan-Vietnam Economist Club Preliminary Meeting

Hanoi, July 1, 2003

On the occasion of Prof. K. Ohno's research trip to Vietnam, a first meeting of the JVEC in Hanoi was organized at 106 Tran Vu Street. Most of the fourteen participants were Saitama/GRIPS graduates, but some of them were those interested in JVEC or coming to GRIPS this autumn. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce JVEC and explain the activities of other related programs.

Prof. Ohno first showed the relationship among four related programs as below. This meeting was for JVEC and GRIPS/Saitama Alumni Association, but since Prof. Ohno manages all these programs, the precise division of activities was unnecessary. The GRIPS Development Forum, a research unit at GRIPS led by Prof. Ohno and his wife, will support JVEC through hosting seminars in Tokyo and Hanoi, web creation and management, publishing and disseminating research output, etc. It is quite possible that intellectual activities of JVEC, GRIPS/Saitama and NEU-JICA may be partially integrated in the future.

It was explained that the academic activities of JVEC was to be held in both Japan and Vietnam. If GRIPS receives a large research grant (under application), a GRIPS office may be established in Hanoi.

As an example of the expected quality of research, the NEU-JICA project's analysis and policy proposal was briefly explained. Its main contents are also shown in the information module below:

However, the expected research topic does not have to be industrialization under globalization. JVEC will accept any high-quality research as long as it related to the socio-economic development of Vietnam.

Additionally, the possibility of JVEC web in Vietnam (including the cost) was discussed. For the moment, it was judged that a web located in Japan was sufficient.
