Registration Now Open for 2014 CAMPUS Asia Summer Program

GRIPS CAMPUS Asia Program will organize Intensive Summer Program for postgraduate students and young professionals who have both a passion for policy development and the potential to become future public policy experts.
 

While taking regular GRIPS summer courses, CAMPUS Asia and GRIPS students can pursue an unique and enriching academic experience by attending special lectures delivered by renowned scholars and practitioners as well as field trips in and around Tokyo.


 

CAMPUS Asia Presents: Special Lectures Schedule

 

All special lectures are free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.

 

  • August 15 (Fri) 14:00-15:30 – Mr. Hiroaki Suzuki, Former Lead Urban Specialist of the World Bank: “Financial Intermediaries in Urban Operations: Their roles and international experiences
  • August 20 (Wed) 14:00-15:30 – Dr. Sohee Minsun Kim, Research Associate at GRIPS: “Integrated approach to the planning and management of urban-rural land resources

About the Speakers

 

Hiroaki Suzuki
Former Lead Urban Specialist, World Bank

 
Mr. Hiroaki Suzuki is the former Lead Urban Specialist of the Urban and Disaster Risk Management Department at the World Bank. He has more than 30 years of operational and research experience with Japanese official development assistance (ODA) agency (OECF), a management consulting firm (OPMAC), and a multinational development bank (World Bank) in industry and infrastructure sectors.

He is specialized in the fields of (i) urban (sustainable urban development and municipal finance), (ii) public enterprise reform and privatization, and (iii) organizational management and institutional development, and holds diverse regional experiences in Africa, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America.

 

Sohee Minsun Kim
Research Associate, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies

 
Dr. Sohee Minsun Kim joined GRIPS as a Research Associate in September 2013.
 
Her research interest is related to the evaluation of mixture of socio-spatial structure and diversity of rural livelihoods through rural-urban linkages in a rapidly urbanizing Asian metropolis.
 
A native of South Korea, Dr. Kim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Landscape Design from Tama Art University, a Master’s degree and a PhD in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo. Prior to joining GRIPS, she has participated in various research projects on integrated planning system in metropolitan region, slum upgrading and community empowerment throughout her academic and professional career at the University of Tokyo, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), India, and the United Nations University – Institute for Sustainability and Peace.

 

Hideo Hashimoto
Professor Emeritus, Osaka University

 
Dr. Hideo Hashimoto is Professor Emeritus of Osaka University, and has been engaged in economic analysis of developing countries at the World Bank for more than ten years. He is specialized in using various macroeconomic models. and has taught development economics at Osaka University and Nazan University in Japan.

Dr. Hashimoto graduated from the University of Tokyo and received his M.A. and Ph.D from University of Illinois.

 

 

CAMPUS Asia Field Trip 2014

 

Field trips are exclusive for CAMPUS Asia and GRIPS students*.

*Limited seats are available for GRIPS students on Life Safety Learning Center trip on August 14.

 

  • August 14 (Thu) 13:00-18:00 – Life Safety Learning Center

Tokyo Fire Department Honjo Life Safety Learning Center provides a disaster prevention experience tour (earthquake and urban flooding experience, rainstorm simulation, and a movie of the Great East Japan Earthquake) under the theme of “Save your life in a disaster through the simulated disaster prevention experience!” In the tour, visitors can go through two hours of disaster prevention experience with an instructor.

  • August 16 (Sat) 13:15-15:30 – Tea Ceremony at Hotel New Otani

Japanese tea ceremony is called Sado or simply Ocha in Japanese. It is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea, called Matcha. Preparing tea in this ceremony means pouring all one’s attention into the predefined movements. The whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, preparing a bowl of tea from one’s heart.
The Hotel New Otani is an urban hotel in a quiet area, away from the bustling city center, surrounded by a 10-acre Japanese garden dating back to the 16th century.

  • August 18 (Mon) 13:15-15:00 – National Diet

The national diet is Japan’s bicameral legislature. It is composed of a lower house that is called the House of Representatives, and an upper house, called the House of Councillors. Both houses of the Diet are directly elected under a parallel voting system.The Diet took its current form in 1947 upon the adoption of the postwar constitution and is considered by the Constitution to be the highest organ of state power. The National Diet Building is located on the hill in Nagatachō district, Chiyoda-ward, Tokyo..

  • August 22 (Fri) – 23 (Sat) 9:00-18:00 – Field Trip & Workshop Co-organized by CAMPUS Asia & GRIPS Development Policy Program “Infrastructure Legacy and the Olympics”
