Photo Collection

Bangkok, Mar. 2005 Hanoi, Sep. 2004

I never studied photography. My camera is not expensive. My technique is crude. But I know what I like to shoot as an object. My main purpose is human. I also like to take the photos of planets and skyviews.

I am particularly attracted to people in dynamic transition. Life style and behavior that emerge from the interaction of old and new, domestic and foreign, radical and traditional, are my favorite themes. That's why I like developing countries in the process of global integration. I like casual scenes. I don't like posed figures or forced composition.

I even want to open a shop to display my photos.

I was targeted by Kiu-chan, a Black Hmong girl, at Sapa's weekend market. As with many other fellow sellers, she spoke English and a little bit of Japanese. She pushed her merchandise, a simple musical instrument worth 15,000 dong, rather hard. It didn't take much time before my resistance crumbled. Being a cute girl is certainly a big advantage. I just hope she goes to school on weekdays. (Sapa, Sep. 2004)

During the late Edo and early Meiji period, photography was newly imported technology and its center was Yokohama. These colored photos are actually black & white photos hand-painted with colored ink. These photos of late 19th century Japan, called "Yokohama photos," were popular among foreigners as souvenirs.
