Advancement of Public Economics and Economic Policy Research Project

Leader
  • Takashi Fukushima

This project aims to evaluate public policy and provide recommendations using economic theory and empirical analysis. Economics is intricately related to public policy. More effective economic theory and empirical analysis are in demand on various fronts, including economic growth, issues of equity and inequity, and quality of life. This project examines the economics of public policy in order to (1) apply researcher-level economics to public policy and (2) further refine the economics aspect of public policy. The main participants in the project are GRIPS faculty members working in economics; doctoral students are also invited to take part. The project’s main activity is inviting academics and policy makers from Japan and abroad to attend research seminars. As part of these seminars, participants have the opportunity to interact informally with guests; these interactions allow the researchers to reveal their behind-the-scenes struggles and problems. Seminars are held in English to facilitate participation by foreign lecturers and students, and research results are released online in the form of GRIPS Discussion Papers.
