Selection of Candidate for the President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies

We hereby announce that on March 16, 2016, the Presidential Selection Committee of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (a national university corporation) held a meeting to select a candidate for assumption of the role of president upon the expiration of the term of office of the current president, and selected Dr. Akihiko TANAKA as such candidate.

 

1.Candidate for the President

Akihiko TANAKA

Date of Birth:August, 1954

Current Position:Professor of International Politics at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia (IASA), the University of Tokyo

Educational Background:Ph.D. in Political Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1981

Field of Study: International Politics in the Major Countries of East Asia

 

 

2.Term of Office

From April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2021 (four years)

 

 

3.Reasons for Selection

    The candidate for the president indicated above, Dr. Akihiko TANAKA, was judged to meet the “Desired Image of the President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies,” which had been formulated by the Presidential Selection Committee, and was nominated for the presidency. As a result of comprehensive consideration through a hearing of opinions and interview, the Presidential Selection Committee has selected Dr. Akihiko TANAKA as the final candidate for the president.

The Presidential Selection Committee judged Dr. Akihiko TANAKA to have the qualities and abilities from three aspects that the President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies is desired to have, as advocated in the “Desired Image of the President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies,” and to be appropriate to hold the presidency of the Institute, which aims at contributing to the development and advancement of democratic governance in Japan and across the world, through research and education regarding policies and policy innovation.

 

 

4.Selection Process

(1) On Thursday, November 19, 2015, the Presidential Selection Committee held a meeting and adopted the “Selection Criteria for the President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies” (Attachment 1).

(2) On Wednesday, January 20, 2016, the Presidential Selection Committee held a meeting and selected one preliminary candidate, Dr. Akihiko TANAKA, from among those nominated by its members.

(3) On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, the Presidential Selection Committee held a meeting, and conducted a hearing of opinions and an interview with Dr. Akihiko TANAKA. Through a vote of confidence, the Committee selected Dr. Akihiko TANAKA as the final candidate for the next president.
