Abstract

The friendship between India and Japan has a long history rooted in spiritual affinity and strong cultural and civilizational ties that has a recorded history of more than 1400 years. In the post-war period, India was one of the first countries to conclude a separate peace treaty with Japan in 1952, after its sovereignty was fully restored following the San Francisco Conference. This marked a new beginning in bilateral ties which for centuries had been singularly free of any kind of dispute – ideological, cultural or territorial. 21st century signaled a new beginning as both countries raised their bilateral ties to Global Partnership (2000) which was later upgraded to a ‘Strategic and Global Partnership in 2006. Following the successful visit of PM Modi in 2014, the relations had been further elevated to a ‘Special Strategic & Global Partnership” and has been considered as one of the most defining relations that would shape the future of global affairs.
