Meiji Photo Gallery

During the late Edo and early Meiji period, photography was newly imported technology and its center was Yokohama. These colored photos are actually black & white photos hand-painted with colored ink. These photos of late 19th century Japan, called "Yokohama photos," were popular among foreigners as souvenirs.
