This project will examine East Asian region-making processes in comparison with European region-making to draw out policy implications for East Asian community building. Conventional comparative study of regional integration in East Asia and Europe has focused mainly on differences rather than similarities in terms of regionalization and regionalism.
In East Asia, regionalism gained momentum after the Asian economic crisis in 1997-98. Meanwhile, the expansion of the EU has brought about a new type of regionalism in Europe; the disparities in wealth and differences in the level of democracy among the EU member countries have influenced the character of this regionalism. Despite the differences between regionalism in East Asia and that in Europe, looking to the example of Europe can provide useful lessons on how to conduct regional cooperation, in which field, and under what kind of architecture. This project will draw out these lessons so they can be applied to policy in East Asia.
The project will examine the following topics through comparative study of East Asia and Europe: 1) regionalization and regionalism; 2) the rise of China and its implications for the East Asia regional order; 3) Islam in Europe and Asia; 4) the process of democratization; and 5) ASEAN diplomacy and diplomacy based on "European unity."
