Many
Asian countries are now facing big challenges such
as the challenge to improve the quality of
administration services and to consolidate domestic
governance as the economy develops. Asian countries
must also promote decentralization and strengthen
local governance.
The
Project for Comparative Research on Local
Governments aims to promote research on local
governance and its management in Japan. We conduct
research on the history and practice of local
governance in Japan since the Meiji Period and
disseminate results in Asian and other countries.
We
collect documents on local governance both inside
and outside Japan and conduct comparative analysis
of these documents. We also promote joint research
with government officials on local governance in
Japan and abroad.
Our
project is implemented in cooperation with the
Council of Local Authorities for International
Relations (CLAIR), an organization specializing in
research on local governance abroad, and other
organizations.
