Research activities in life sciences have been developing rapidly, as is evident in human genome sequencing and analysis of gene functions. Especially as Japanese society ages, it is important to realize a healthy and secure life for citizens by improving medical care and so on through the application of life sciences.
In the second Science and Technology Basic Plan enacted in FY2001, glife sciencesh was designated as one of the four priority fields. As a result, basic research in this field has been activated, as seen in the increase of the number of articles by Japanese teams in prominent scientific journals. Despite this increase in research, it is now being pointed out that cases of basic research of life sciences actually being applied to medical care have rarely been seen. Therefore, in the third Science and Technology Basic Plan starting from FY2006, it is specified that the fruits of life sciences should be returned to citizens by improvement of the gbridgingh function between basic research and practical use.
In this project, we study a policy of bridging basic research to medical application, an evaluation methodology of the impact of life sciences on the national economy, and a basis, such as bioethics, for supporting life sciences.
