Security and International Issues

Leader

Globalization and the rise of China are bringing about important changes in the security environment of East Asia, and with the deepening of the link between economic activities and security issues, the range of problems to be addressed is expanding. The objective of this project is to examine, from the perspective of security studies and international political economy, what the implications of the rise of China on East Asian international relations and security environment are, and how countries in and outside the region are coping with them.

From the security perspective, China’s military/diplomatic moves will be examined, and how Japan and the United States as well as other Asian countries are dealing with them will be investigated. From an international political economy standpoint, Chinese economy and its currency policy will be studied.

The project also investigates how the Ministry of Defense/Self-Defense Forces, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant organizations have responded to the Great East Japan Earthquake and what the implications on Japan’s security/foreign policy are.

Policy recommendations will be formulated based on the results of the research.
