Living in Japan

Daily Support

A unique aspect of GRIPS is its extensive system to support students in their daily lives. We consider daily life to be as important as academic life, especially for foreign scholars who are unfamiliar with Japan. Because international students have comprised, on average, about 60% of GRIPS’ student body for the last 10 years, we have developed comprehensive services to support these students in their daily lives. Centered around the Student Office, we offer advice on daily life matters and routine concerns and provide support in case of personal problems.

Upon receiving acceptance letters, new students are offered information on enrollment procedures and pre-departure preparation to assist them in preparing for their stay in Japan. The Student Office organizes orientation programs for all incoming students and helps arriving international students get organized and settled in Japan. The Office handles applications for student accommodation at Tokyo International Exchange Center (TIEC), GRIPS International House (GRIPS IH) and Misato Housing Complex (Misato) and deals with matters concerning health insurance, foreign resident registration, bank account, rescuer’s insurance and commuter pass. The Student Office staff can also accompany students to a clinic or hospital in case of language or other difficulties and assists students in obtaining visa for family members and finding suitable schools for accompanying children.

The Student Office works closely with the academic staff, Admissions Office, and Health Services Center, as well as community members and other organizations. The Student Office organizes and facilitates a number of social events and activities, including half day Tokyo tour, field trips and parties, and works to promote meaningful interaction and understanding between Japanese and nationals of other countries. A handbook for living and studying in Japan is published, containing information on questions commonly asked by international students.
