Current Research Interests (1) role of the government in the growth and (2) that of demand management, (3) the causes of rapid growth in Japan between 1945 and 1975, and (4) causes of the slow down in growth from the mid-1970's.

Joined the Economic Planning Agency in 1966, and wrote major parts of the Economic White Paper in 1990 and '91, Served as the Vice-Minister for International Economic Affairs in 1997 and 1998. Professor at GRIPS, 1998. Visiting Professor at GRIPS, 2009-present. Professor Emeritus at GRIPS, 2010-present
