Recent years have witnessed the remarkable growth of the Asian economy. The rise of China along with the rise of India and the economic growth of ASEAN countries will surely change the global and regional balance of power and have significant impact on this region. The consequences of these developments as well as the deepening interdependence in the region are still to be seen.
Dr. Shiraishi, one of Japan's foremost experts on Southeast Asian politics will share his thoughts on Japan's strategic thinking that informs its Foreign policy initiatives towards Asia.

About the Speaker

Dr. Shiraishi graduated the University of Tokyo in 1972. In 1986 he was awarded his Ph.D. in History from Cornell University. He stayed on at Cornell University as an assistant professor(´87) and later as a professor (´96). In 1996 he became a professor at Kyoto University's Center for Southeast Asian Studies. In 2000 he was invited as a visiting professor by National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), where he was appointed professor and Vice-President in 2005. In the same year he took on the position of President of the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO). In April 2009 he was appointed a full-time Executive member of Council for Science and Technology Policy.
Dr. Shiraishi specializes in Government and Politics in East Asia. He has numerous publications; to name a few: "An Age in Motion: Popular Radicalism in Java 1912-1926"(1990) which won the Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize; "Indonesia-Nation and PoliticsE(1992)" which won the Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities; "The Making of A Region: How to Think about East Asia" (2000) which won the Yomiuri-Yoshino Sakuzo Prize. In 2007 he was awarded the "Medal with Purple Ribbon" for his outstanding contribution to southeast Asian studies.

GRIPS Forum

Since its establishment in 1997, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), as the only graduate school in Japan specializing in policy research, has promoted education and research on a wide range of policy issues. Utilizing our vast policy network, this Forum invites leaders from various fields including government, academia and business, as well as staff from our own faculty, to deliver lectures on current policy concerns. The Forum welcomes attendance of GRIPS faculty and students as well as participants from outside the university. Simultaneous interpretation will be available (Japanese/English).
