The International Development Studies Program was launched in 2000 in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). With the objective of fostering leadership in development assistance and program planning as well as equipping students with high-level abilities in theoretical thinking and practical applications, the program offers graduate training in the field of development studies.

Target Group

Government officials, staff of related organizations of specified developing countries, and individuals who wish to pursue a career in international development or international cooperation.

Program Design

The program explores effective development policies within the context of the development process, and the curriculum covers a broad range of critical issues with a special focus on emerging global and regional concerns. Through systematic and intensive training in this area, the program equips students with high-level abilities in theoretical thinking and practical applications. The core courses provide students with an understanding of the basic framework of international development studies and problems by utilizing standard economic theories and quantitative methods. Elective courses provide students with a deep understanding of such issues as poverty reduction, the role of governance in the development process, and technology and the environment.
Students can also undertake an internship in the second year of up to six months.
