Degree Programs

General Information

GRIPS offers graduate programs at both the Master's and Ph.D. levels. Our degree programs combine a broad disciplinary curriculum with an applied research focus and foster a commitment to international, state, and regional policy issues. This multifaceted approach provides the basis for a comprehensive understanding of economic development and socio-political change. The degree programs at GRIPS provide high-quality education, and the school will continue to update its courses and develop new courses on the basis of ongoing policy research and changing policy issues.

GRIPS currently offers seven international programs and five domestic programs at the Master's level as well as four Ph.D. programs to which both international and domestic students are admitted. The international programs at GRIPS are conducted solely in English, and the domestic programs are taught in Japanese. However, qualified international and Japanese students can take courses in either language. In addition, Japanese language classes are provided for students who wish to study Japanese during their period of study.

For international students, the minimum residential requirement to obtain a Master's degree is one year, and most students can satisfy all requirements for the degree within that time. For Ph.D. students who have completed a Master's program at GRIPS, the minimum residential requirement is one additional year. After successful completion of all coursework, Ph.D. students can continue working on their dissertations at GRIPS or in their home countries.

Teaching methods include lecture, seminar, and tutorial. Faculty members also act as advisors, meeting with students regularly throughout the year to supervise their research and assist them with academic matters. Courses are generally assessed by written examinations and term papers.

The programs at GRIPS are demanding and require a high level of commitment from students. The school operates an a four-term calendar with a 16-week Fall Term, 8-week Winter Term, 16-week Spring Term, and 8-week Summer Term.
