CAMPUS Asia Summer Program: Fortnight at GRIPS 2013 Recap
On 8-22 August 2013, GRIPS CAMPUS Asia hosted a first-of-its-kind intensive 2-week summer program titled “Fortnight at GRIPS 2013”. This year, 9 students from Korean Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management (KDIS) and 5 students from School of Public Policy and Management of Tsinghua University (SPPM) attended the program aiming at further development of academic and cross-cultural exchange.

In the opening ceremony, Dean Prof. Oyama extended warm welcome to the participants and spoke about the brief history of the institute and outline of the academic characteristics of GRIPS. Following a campus tour and program guidance provided by Dr. Sohee Kim, students attended the six-session Foreign Direct Investment Course in the afternoon to start the program.

On Monday, August 12, students participated in a field trip to Nippon Koei R&D Center in Tsukuba organized by GRIPS summer program along with GRIPS regular students. The trip included greetings and introductions by Deputy Director Dr.Takahashi, lectures by General Manager Mr. Nakamura and other researchers, and a guided tour to the laboratories. Participants said, “It was very interesting to see how aware of and prepared for disaster management Japan is from a scientific and engineering perspective.”
For the second field trip of the program, the group visited Bank of Japan Main Office in Chuo-ku, Tokyo in early morning of August 19. After watching the introductory video of the Bank of Japan, the participants toured inside the premises including the vault and learned about the history. The Bank also provided a lecture followed by a Q&A session on BOJ’s four principal missions which covered major developments in the central bank’s functions after the global financial crisis.

On Thursday, August 22, CAMPUS Asia summer program participants, GRIPS students, faculty and staff joined the Completion Ceremony and Farewell Party. The festivities began with dinner, conversation and a slideshow in the lounge and concluded with certificates and speeches. Vice President Prof. Yokomichi awarded Certificate of Completion to all of 14 participants who have successfully completed courses and programs.
